Undergraduate Research Projects (LAP) Program

Esteemed Instructors and Students,

2016-2017 Academic Year Undergraduate Research Projects (LAP) Program application has begun. LAP Program aims to develop research and innovation environment in the University, promote inter-disciplinary studies, create a prevalent undergraduate research/entrepreneurship culture, support team work in research and continue training researcher and creative students in accordance with the strategic plan of Atilim University.

Projects in LAP Program LAP-A: Credit Course Projects Support, LAP-B: Contest/Innovation Project Support and LAP-C: Invitation-Based Project Support.

1. PROJECTS TO BE SUPPORTED WITHIN THE SCOPE OF LAP PROGRAM

LAP-A Credit Course Projects Support

The support provided for the research courses and dissertations lasting one academic year within the scope of an undergraduate program.

a. Financial support, up to 1.000 TL per student and maximum 15.000 TL in total, will be available to be used in research activities related to courses taken. 

b. These studies are expected to have research purposes.

c. As students get credit from these courses, students and instructors shall not be granted an additional financial support. GPA limitation shall not be applied for the participation of students. 

   

LAP-B Contest / Innovation Project Support:

The support provided to Student Teams within an academic year for external contests in which our students participate.

a. Students can submit their project offers under the counseling of instructors.  The contest projects approved for support will be announced to students to create teams.

b. Contest project teams can be leaded by a supervisor and several co-supervisors consisting of instructors. Under the counseling of supervisor and co-supervisors, students can be executors of the projects proposed by students.

c. Undergraduate students can apply to project invitations as researchers or volunteers and selected students can involve in project teams. Announcements will be made on the website of ARGEDA so that students can become a candidate for project teams.

d. Project teams can be granted financial support up to 2.000 TL to meet the costs of each contest project research. Project teams are expected to provide more support from other sources, if necessary.

e. For each project, each supervisor and co-supervisor will be granted financial support up to 1.000 TL to be used to participate in scientific/art/cultural activities and congresses and purchase machine-equipment and consumables.

f. The students who have minimum GPA of 2.50 and have passed 1st grade will be eligible to apply to be involved in research team. Students cannot be a researcher in more than one project.

 

LAP-C Invitation-Based Project Support:

The support provided to student teams established under the leadership of a supervisor instructor (supervisor can be a graduate program student) within the scope of an independent research subject.

a. Instructors and students can apply to the program.

b. Research teams can be leaded by a supervisor and several co-supervisors consisting of instructors. Graduate program students can also become a co-supervisor.

c. Undergraduate students can apply to project invitations as researchers or volunteers and selected students can involve in project teams. Announcements will be made on the website of ARGEDA so that students can become a candidate for project teams.

d. The project proposals developed by students as a team can be submitted under the counseling of one or more instructors.

e. Each supervisor can be granted financial support up to 2.000 TL to meet the costs of project research.

f. For each project, each supervisor and co-supervisor will be granted financial support up to 1.000 TL to be used to participate in scientific/art/cultural activities and congresses and purchase machine-equipment and consumables.

g. Undergraduate students can apply to project invitations as researchers or volunteers and selected students can involve in project teams.

h. The students who have minimum GPA of 2.50 and have passed 1st grade will be eligible to apply to be involved in research team. Students cannot be a researcher in more than one project.

   

2. INFORMATION ABOUT LAP PROGRAM

a. Students/supervisors are required to choose one of three sub-categories while submitting an offer: basic research (1)experimental development (2), and innovative product or process (3) .  Project activities (4) and outputs must comply with selected sub-category.

Proposal of LAP projects to be conducted along with externally supported new or ongoing project (5) is especially promoted. The projects starting as a research project which is recognized and supported by the industry and having inter-disciplinary cooperation and further research potential are preferable. In addition to “Industry Supported Projects”, the projects of TUBITAK ARDEB, TEYDEB, BIDEB, European Union ERASMUS+, Horizon2020 and Public Institutions can be regarded as other externally supported projects.

      a. In each team, the number of students must be twice as more than that of supervisor(s).

      b. Preparatory school and first grade students can voluntarily be involved in the teams upon the approval of project supervisors.

      c. The students completing their projects successfully will be given undergraduate research participation certificate.

 

3. REQUIREMENTS TO BE FULFILLED IF PROJECT OFFER IS ACCEPTED

a. Research studies being conducted within the scope of program shall be completed within relevant academic year.

b. When LAP projects are finished, minimum one of below given activities must be conducted:

1) Oral presentation or poster exhibitions in the conferences to be held in or out of the university,

2) Preparing an article, presentation and/or publication about the subject of research,

3) Application to national and/or international Undergraduate contests complying with the field and category of the project within relevant academic year.

c. The posters to be prepared by student teams under the counseling of project supervisors shall be exhibited in academic activities to be held at the end of academic year.

 

4. PROJECT OFFER CALENDAR

A soft and printed and signed copy of project offers must be submitted to Office of ARGEDO-TTO till the end of shift on Tuesday, 4 October 2016.

Project offers shall be presented and evaluated according to below given calendar.

5.   SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENTS OF LAP PROJECTS

a. Each researcher student accepted to a project in LAP-B or LAP-C category shall be paid 1.000 TL of scholarship in two installments in relevant academic year.

b. The researcher students to receive the scholarship must have minimum 2 semesters to their graduation, have paid their tuition fee and accept working in the research project for minimum 100 hours in the academic year.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Our instructors and students who intend to submit a project offer can receive assist from the Office of ARGEDA-TTO during the preparation period of project offer and budget.

(1) Basic Research: Theoretical or experimental studies which are conducted to get new information about the principles of a phenomenon or observable fact and do not have a specific application or use apparently.

(2) Experimental Development: Systematic studies which are conducted to produce materials, products or tools to be used in new processes, systems and services or develop currently used materials etc. by means of current information gained through research and/or practical experiences. 

 (3) Innovative Product or Process: The product (goods or service) of which technological features or purpose of use are considerably different from its former versions. Production or service provision methods which are either new or remarkably enhanced in terms of technology are called process innovation.

(4) Project Activities: R&D projects should include competitive innovations that will create extra added value. Projects must contain one or more R&D activity stage(s) planned before:

a. Concept development

b. Technological/technical and economic feasibility study

c. Laboratory studies in the transition process from concept to design

d. Design and drawing studies

e. Prototype production

f. Pilot plant/system set up

g. Test production

h. Patent and license works

i. Activities on finding after-sale solutions for the problems emerging from product design.

(5) The LAP project offers to be conducted along with new or ongoing externally supported projects must contain the attachment of the letter of intent written by the executors of relevant organization(s) or ongoing projects to indicate the intention of cooperating with Atilim University. It is necessary to sign “ATU-Counseling Permission” with the organization(s) during contract process or have an ongoing externally-supported project contract so that externally-supported project can be executed as “Industry Supported LAP”. Examples of externally-supported projects: ATU Industry Counseling Projects; TUBITAK, TEYDEB, SANTEZ, EU projects and projects conducted with Public Institutions.
